What your child learns in Stage 2, Part A

Stage 2 marks a shift toward more abstract thinking and flexible problem-solving. Part A focuses on developing efficient strategies and deeper number understanding.

For example:

Place Value & Number Operations: Understanding numbers up to 10,000, using expanded notation, and applying mental and written strategies for addition and subtraction.
Multiplication & Division: Developing recall of multiplication facts to 10 × 10, using arrays, area models, and number properties to solve problems.
Fractions & Decimals: Recognising and representing halves, quarters, eighths, and tenths; comparing and ordering simple fractions and decimals.
Patterns & Algebra: Identifying number patterns, exploring number relationships, and using variables to describe simple rules.
Measurement: Estimating and measuring length, mass, capacity, and temperature using metric units; telling time to the minute and converting between units.
2D Shapes & 3D Objects: Classifying shapes and objects based on properties such as angles, faces, and edges; understanding symmetry and transformations.
